What Does tCO2e Actually Stand For?

tCO2e stands for tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent. It is the universal unit used in all greenhouse gas reporting — every carbon questionnaire, CSRD disclosure, sustainability rating, and Carbon Passport uses this unit.

The critical word is "equivalent." Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the most common greenhouse gas from human activity — but it is far from the only one. • CO2e — carbon dioxide equivalent, any greenhouse gas scaled to CO2 (the concept)
• kgCO2e — kilograms of CO2 equivalent (used for individual activities and small quantities)
• tCO2e — metric tonnes of CO2 equivalent (1,000 kgCO2e); standard unit in all formal reporting
• MtCO2e — million tonnes (used for national or industry-level figures)

How Are Emission Factors Used to Convert Activities into tCO2e?

An emission factor is a published conversion rate. DEFRA publishes these annually. The calculation is:

Activity quantity × emission factor = kgCO2e → ÷ 1,000 = tCO2e

Example: 20,000 kWh of German electricity 20,000 × 0.364 (kgCO2e/kWh) = 7,280 kgCO2e ÷ 1,000 = 7.28 tCO2e
