What Does B Corp Certification Ask About Carbon?

B Corp carbon requirements appear in the Environment section of the B Impact Assessment (BIA) — the scoring tool used by B Lab to certify businesses. To earn B Corp certification, a company must score at least 80 points across all five impact areas: Governance, Workers, Community, Environment, and Customers.

The Environment section covers air, climate, water, land, and biodiversity. Carbon and greenhouse gas emissions sit within the Air and Climate subcategory and are among the highest-weighted questions in the entire assessment.

Which B Impact Assessment Questions Cover Carbon Emissions?

The B Impact Assessment does not use the terms "Scope 1, 2, and 3" explicitly, but it asks for data that maps directly onto these categories:

• Do you use renewable energy? — Percentage of electricity from renewable sources (REGO/GO-backed tariff qualifies).
• Have your emissions been independently verified? — Third-party verification scores bonus points but is not required.

What Score Can You Get in the Air and Climate Section?

B Lab does not publish exact point allocations publicly, but the Environment section is worth approximately 15–20 points of the total 200-point BIA. Within Environment, Air and Climate is typically the largest sub-section. A company with:

• Full Scope 1, 2, and 3 data tracked: substantial base score
• An emissions reduction target (any target with a base year): additional points
• Renewable electricity: further points
• Third-party verification: bonus points
• Actions taken to reduce emissions: additional per-action points

A business that has simply measured its emissions and can input its tCO2e figures will score significantly better in the Air and Climate section than one that has not measured at all.
